You may think of hair loss as a problem that only affects men, and indeed, about half of men begin losing hair by the age of 35. But women can and do experience hair loss, too. Surprisingly, about 40% of women suffer from gradual hair loss. A new treatment, one that is all-natural and harnesses your body’s own resources, is helping people who are losing their hair.

At Integrative Health & Heart and Integrative Skin ID, our team provides preventive and urgent care, along with screenings, concierge medicine, and a host of cosmetic services. Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy is a treatment that we’re particularly excited about, as it helps solve problems like hair loss using our body’s own powerful resources.

PRP uses the nutrients and healing power of your own blood to stop and even reverse hair loss.

The cause of hair loss

It’s a myth that hair loss is inherited from your mother. Androgenetic alopecia — the technical name for hair loss — happens only if you inherit genes from both your mother and your father.

Understanding the biology of hair is the key to understanding hair loss. To begin with, your skin is covered with millions of hair follicles, and each one goes through four stages of growth:

In the anagen or growth, stage, your hair follicle produces a complete strand of hair that is nourished by blood vessels in your skin. The genes that cause hair loss actually cause weakened hair follicles. So each time your hair enters the anagen phase, the follicle shrinks and the shaft of hair produced becomes shorter and finer. Eventually, your follicle stops growing hair.

Male-pattern and female-pattern baldness are different. Men usually lose hair first on the crowns of their heads, but women generally have thinning all over their heads.

The hidden power in your body

Platelet-rich plasma therapy relies on the powerful growth agents found in your blood to stimulate tissue regeneration. The platelets in your blood are largely responsible for clotting, but they also contain proteins that aid in healing and repair. When these proteins, which are powerful growth factors, are isolated and directed to strengthening your weak hair follicles, the result is less hair loss and more hair growth.

In order to direct the power of the growth factors in your blood to your scalp, we draw some of your own blood and separate the components of your sample by spinning it in a centrifuge. We then mix this concentrate back in with your plasma and inject them into the tissue that needs to be healed — in this case, your scalp.

Once introduced to the area, PRP regenerates dermal papilla cells in your scalp tissue. These unique cells regulate hair growth and development in your follicles. PRP helps new hair grow and improves the skin of your scalp, which allows it to better support strong, healthy hair.

What to expect when you have PRP therapy

The procedure usually takes about an hour. After we draw your blood and isolate your platelets using the centrifuge, we prepare your scalp with a topical anesthetic to keep you comfortable as the injections are administered.

Your scalp may be slightly red or pink, but that doesn’t last long. There’s no downtime with PRP therapy, so you can get right back to your life without skipping a beat. You can shower and wash your hair just a few hours after your treatment, but you shouldn’t use harsh chemicals like those in hair color or perms for at least several days.

Depending on the extent of your hair loss, your goals, and numerous other factors, you may need a series of treatments, spread over a few months. With each treatment, we continue to stimulate your hair follicles and ensure that your hair growth progresses as planned.
