The cells in your skin are in a constant state of renewal and replenishment. But as you grow older, the cells don’t turn over as quickly as they used to, and your body stops making key proteins that keep your skin flexible, thick, and uplifted. The result is skin that looks droopy, thin, and marred with brown spots and wrinkles.
While face-lifts still exist as a standby, new therapies let you avoid surgery by helping your skin restore itself. At Integrative Health and Heart & Integrative Skin ID in Frisco, Texas, our aesthetics team offers nonsurgical, minimally invasive skin-rejuvenating treatments including the increasingly popular microneedling, with or without platelet-rich plasma (PRP).
Microneedling is versatile
Our experts use a microneedling device called the SkinPen® Precision to jump-start your skin’s ability to heal and rebuild itself. The SkinPen is the first microneedling device to be cleared by the FDA for treating facial scars, including acne scars. We also use the SkinPen to:
- Remove brown spots and hyperpigmentation
- Tighten and firm your skin
- Lift and tone sagging skin
- Erase fine lines and wrinkles
- Minimize pores
- Improve stretch marks
- Regrow scalp hair
In a single treatment session, you can microneedle multiple areas, such as your face, neck, and décolletage.
Microneedling works with your body
One of the main reasons microneedling is such a popular treatment is that it works with your body’s own self-healing processes to improve your skin quality. The SkinPen’s single-use needle cartridge contains tiny surgical needles that pierce your skin, creating controlled wound channels that stimulate your body’s healing cascade.
After numbing your skin so you stay comfortable, we adjust the length of the needles based on the area that we’re treating.
The SkinPen’s treatment head is smaller than most microneedling devices, so it can reach crevices, such as around your nose. By creating micro wounds in your skin, the SkinPen initiates the following healing cascade:
Your body rushes oxygen-rich blood to the micro wounds to disinfect them, remove debris and old proteins that don’t support your skin anymore, and increase circulation to the area so your skin can begin to rebuild itself.
Your skin rebuilds the micro wounds with granulation cells. You also create new blood vessels in the area, to rejuvenate your skin and keep it nourished.
Your body produces more of the building-block proteins collagen and elastin, which firm up and elasticize your skin.
After your treatment, which only takes about 30 minutes, you’ll notice that your skin already looks bright and glowing. Over the next weeks to months, as your skin remodels itself with new collagen, the surface of your skin evens out, and the texture of your skin improves. Your skin looks and feels firmer, thicker, and more flexible.
Microneedling works with PRP
After we create the tiny wound channels with SkinPen, your skin is temporarily better able to absorb nutrients into its deepest layers. We either treat your skin with nourishing serums or with PRP. Platelet-rich plasma is a special serum that we create using about 2-4 tablespoons of blood that we withdraw from your arm and then spin in a centrifuge to separate the platelets.
Platelets are the part of your blood that coagulates wounds so your skin can begin to heal. Platelets contain growth factors and proteins that help you build healthier skin cells. Combining microneedling with PRP gives you even better, faster results.
Microneedling grows hair, too
Losing your scalp hair is a sign that your follicles, otherwise known as pores, aren’t healthy. By microneedling areas of your scalp that have suffered recent hair loss and adding PRP, our experts let your follicles rebuild themselves with new collagen and elastin.
Stronger, healthier follicles regrow hair within months. About one year after your last microneedling treatment with PRP, you’ll have permanent new hair growth.
Microneedling is affordable
Studies have demonstrated that microneedling treatments are just as effective at rejuvenating the skin as lasers are. In most cases, though, microneedling treatments are better for your budget.
Even though you need a series of treatments over several months (leaving about a month between your treatments so your skin can heal and rebuild), each session is priced comfortably. You rejuvenate your skin gradually and pay more gradually, too.
